Discover the ins and outs of an oyster farm first-hand
Service Description
This four-hour tour is for those interested in discovering the inner workings of an oyster farm. In addition to kayaking in the tidal estuary, you and your party of up to eight people will put on waders and get to explore the whole farm at low tide. Experience the oyster sorting process, learn how they are protecting the estuary ecosystem, and pick your own oysters to enjoy at the end of the trip. Itinerary: 1. Welcome and Paddle Introduction (20 minutes) 2. Kayak ~1 Mile along the rocky shore observing wildlife along the way (binoculars available on request) (20-30 minutes) 3. Arrive at the Hidden Coast Shellfish's floating dock to take a break from paddling, put on waiters and experience the day in a life of an oyster fisherman (2.5 hours) 4. Kayak back to Durham, keeping an eye out for wildlife and learning about the history of the area along the way (30-40 minutes) What to bring: -Close-Toed Shoes- Old sneakers work great -Moisture wicking t-shirt (Synthetic and wool are great. Cotton only in hot temps) -Shorts/ Bathing Suit (that covers your thighs to avoid sun exposure while paddling) -Hat -Sunglasses -Sunblock -Reusable Water Bottle -Raincoat (on rainy days) What Not to bring: -Electronics -Valuables -Clothing with cotton (it makes you really cold when wet) What we will lend you: -Lifejacket -Kayak -Kayak Paddle Note on kayaking: No kayaking experience is required, however, this trip involves physical activities like getting out of a kayak onto a dock. If you think you will need assistance to navigate your kayak, your tour guide has a tow rope that they can attach to your boat, or they can paddle in a double kayak with you. All tour logistics will be discussed at length in the paddle introduction at the beginning of the tour. Cancellation/Refund Policy: Any tours cancelled a week prior to the tour date will are eligible for a full refund. Tours cancelled within one week of the tour date will not be refunded. In the event of inclement weather including heavy rain, thunder and high winds, we will find a date to reschedule the tour. If we are not able to reschedule, a full refund will be issued. Cheers!
